The movie poster is a crucial tool in getting our bums on cinema seats, offering a handy snapshot of a film's genre, cast and the likely giggle/weeping factor. Most do the job admirably - but Hollywood isn’t beyond throwing us the odd curveball to keep us on our toes (and they don’t come much curvier than some of these). Here’s our identity parade of some of movieland's billboard offenders...

The poster equivalent of booking a jaunty weekend break to Hove only to find yourself in the smoky part of Basra, this one-sheet looks like it might be just the kind of uplifting family fun for a dull summer's evening ("Oooh look, it's that smiley Cameron Diaz! And there's the cheery one from Little Miss Sunshine!"). Which it may well be, but only once you get past the organ harvesting, daughter-suing-parents plotline and terminal illness.

I was going to suggest Phantom Menace, but apart from Maul's eyes, all that poster promised was a naked Threepio, some bint with a funny hairdo and odd makeup, an annoying brat, McGregor looking like a berk, and a floppy-eared moron. And Liam Neeson. Guess it wasn't that misleading after all. Read More
