How Deep Is The Mariana Trench, In Movie Terms?
The Mariana Trench explained on film

Last weekend, James Cameron dived to the bottom of the Mariana Trench. It’s about seven miles deep, deeper under the Earth’s surface than Everest is high. But if you are – like us – a movie lover who views the world entirely through the lens of cinema, how deep is that really? We’ve taken a few other massive things for reference, and here we explain it in film terms.

Before you all contact us with your Maths corrections, all measurements are approximate and rounded off, but based on the best information we can cobble together.

1 RE: Which Enterprise?
L: TyrannosaurusAlan I know I am a total pedant, but which Enterprise? As depending on which model (NCC-1701?) varies in size. Ok, I'll go and sit in the nerd corner now :-) e used JJ Abrams' 2009 NCC-1701, Alan. :) More

7 RE:
L: Laxy24 Surely Home Tree in Avatar was higher than 150m. Tallest trees on earth reach 100m and Home Tree was depicted like a towering city. hat's what our research came up with. It's still half as tall again as the world's tallest redwood, so that ain't bad - and obviously it's much more massive. More

9 RE: This puts things in perspective for me.
L: Cameron1975Williams Thank you Empire. However, your diagram doesn't get across how dangerous it is to go that deep. I hear that the pressure on every sqaure inch is the equivalent of turning the Eiffel Tower upside down and putting the point on your big toe. an maths says that there is 16,139lbs per square inch at 11000m and the metal part of the Eiffel Tower is very roughly about 16,100,000lbs. So, not quite. More

Cheers Empire ... you just made me go 'whooooooah', like Bill & Ted. Always a good thing. I'd actually quite like that as a poster. Say what you like about his work, James Cameron is an inspiring man. I feel a man crush coming on ... More
