Roger Ellsworth & Louise Clark (Costume)

Jaws might not be a film known for its sartorial elegance but the costume work of Robert Ellsworth (men’s wardrobe) and Louise Clark (women’s wardrobe) is an object lesson in unobtrusive but telling wardrobe. For a start it doesn’t seem to have dated as much as many mid-'70s flicks, no bell-bottom flares or flyaway collars — perhaps Amity was an Island that fashion forgot and so their look remains tireless. But more than that, Jaws costumes constantly reinforce character and meaning: Brody’s black polo neck — in a colourful summer seaside town — suggests the sophistication of a big city fish out of water; Quint’s battered green flak jacket that speaks of years of conflict, both human (Korea?) and shark; Mayor Vaughn’s grey jacket dotted with little white anchors — you could never trust a man with such chintzy-wearing-Amity’s-maritime-heritage-literally-on-its-sleeve ridiculousness.
