10 Great Jack Black Performances Dewey Finn The School Of Rock
Black's first star vehicle was the disappointing Farrellys comedy, Shallow Hal, but he got a second bite at the cherry with Richard Linklater's superb comedy, in which he plays a failed rocker who pretends to be a substitute music teacher, turning his class into a rock band along the way. With dialogue tailored for him by his old chum Mike White, the lovable and cool Dewey remains Black's finest hour. Best moment: The scene where he demonstrates his new song to his class: a bravura turn where Black, enjoying wonderful chemistry with the gifted pack of child actors, orchestrates an entire classroom while pretending to be just about every instrument you can think of. Does he sing? He sings, he scats, he plays guitar, he puts together a rockin' band with some badass tunery… this is the real frickin' deal. None more Black? This is where the line between actor and star becomes really blurred, with Black, White and Linklater crucially adding one vital element to the aforementioned Black template: a heart. Dewey may be an egotist and, at first, completely unaware of his shortcomings, but he's a genuinely nice guy whose relationship with the kids shapes him into a hero we can root for. As he puts it so memorably: "Your kids have touched me, and I'm pretty sure I've touched them as well."

"Although Nacho Libre isn't an entirely successful attempt to blend the innocent appeal of School Of Rock (Mike White wrote both movies) with the off-beat dynamics of Napoleon Dynamite (Jared Hess directed both)..."
I thought Richard Linklater directed School of Rock?
sp;
Empire are saying Jared Hess directed both Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, not School of Rock & Napoleon Dynamite. Read More
