I do love it when pedants are corrected. It's a special sort of glowy feeling correcting those accustomed to correcting.s a pedant myself, I do have to be extra certain that my corrections are, indeed, correct.
Try this one at parties folks: If somesays "octopuses" and a pedant wades in saying it's "octo, then do butt in and say, "well, actually, it's 'octoi]'". And then make sure you have a camera for the face they will inevitably pull...ote]

ctually, it IS "praying mantis". Try googling "preying mantis" and see what comes up.
I presume the name comes from the fact that the stance with which they hold their legs/claws/arms/whatever makes it look as though they are praying.
pot on - encyclopedia definition of a mantis includes the line:
A colloquial name for the order is g mantis"se of the typical "prayer-like" stance, although the term is often mis-spelled as "preying mantis" since mantises are notoriously predatory.
