11 Horror Franchises That Should Have Stopped At 1
As a general rule, horror franchises get worse as they go along. Whether this is to do with audience jading, lack of ideas or monkeys with typewriters we don't know, but what we do know is that the following maxim, with a very few exceptions, applies: 'The quality of a horror franchise film is in inverse relation to its number in a series: the higher the number, the worse the film. This remains true even if the sequel's title doesn't contain a number, such as Hellraiser: Bloodline or Freddy vs. Jason'. We are calling this Craven's Maxim, after Wes, king of the horror franchise. With Saw V out this week, join us for a look back at the most bloated horror franchises in film history. (Remakes, prequels and team-ups included)

Scream

The Franchise Count

Scream, Scream 2, Scream 3 (Scream 4 is currently in production)

The Original
The original was a sensation on its release in 1996, and with its self-referential style spawned a host of imitations and influenced a generation of horror directors, not to mention instigating a lucrative merchandise line in scary masks. The quote "What's your favourite scary movie?" entered pop culture lexicon and, perhaps most importantly of all, Courtney Cox hooked up with David Arquette.

The Sequels
The sequel was surprisingly solid, upping the body count and the fun - and thankfully killing off Jamie Kennedy's Randy, who was getting annoying. But the third was an exercise in nobody cares. The director, the writer (Ehren Kruger taking over from Kevin Williamson) and the stars all seemed to be well over it, and the audience concurred.

Scream 4 has been announced by the Weinstein Company, so hopefully they can get things back on track and breathe life into a sagging franchise - though history isn't exactly on their side.

What the hell are you guys on????
this list is utterly wrong exorcist 2 was the only shit one out of the 5, omen 4 was utter crap, the halloween remake was utter genius and was one par of the original, The friday the 13th series is brilliant sure 6,7,8 arent as great as the others but they are cheap entertainment and isnt that what films made for, the scream films are all good in their own way i mean 3 has jay and silent bob whats not love i mean courtney cox and neve campbell running about love it ;), texas chainsaw massacre re... Read More

Some right, some wrong...
Scream 2 was at least equal to the original, although I agree that 3 was a load of rubbish; Omen 2 was also pretty decent, though it all went downhill from there. Child’s Play was (to my mind) a series that would’ve been better off never made at all, and as for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I thought the remake was pretty decent, although the prequel and the sequels to the original were all hopeless (with the exception of Matthew McConaughey stellar turn in ‘the Next Generation&... Read More

WHAT! The child's play films are great! Bride of chucky is my favourite and the only one that I didn't like was 2, but the ending saved the film. The Texas chainsaw massacre remake was pretty good. I really liked Hellraiser 4, but 2 and 3 were terrible. The only bad Elm street films were 2 and 6, but I enjoyed the others, I loved 3 and 7-even more than 1. ... Read More

Seriously, what the fuck was that?
You say all of these horror movie series should have stopped at 1, yet in your other Halloween article, you say that 5 of the supposedly pointless films have provided some of the scariest moments in Horror history. Omen III, Scream 2, Day Of The Dead, Dawn Of The Dead (remake) and Halloween III. Whatchu talkin' 'bout Empire? On a couple of these cases, I may actually agree with you (definitely NOT on the Romero Dead saga) but you're not even being consistent here. Sort it out! ... Read More

Hilarious in places, misguided in other's.
Romero's DEAD SAGA is genius, i love all of them, as does empire, so we cool about that. PHANTASM Saga is probably a bit more high brow than some of the other crap on the list. Cant wait for PHANTASM V. TCM, Hopper's original should of been a one off, the sequels and the remakes sucked ass juice. ELM ST saga, First one was brilliant the sequels were crap. Omen, same again. SCREAM was shit full stop. HALLOWEEN Carpenter's original is still the best, H20 was a load of shite. HELLRAISER, first th... Read More

RE:
I have to agree with most of the comments here so far. Although intended as a light-hearted Halloween article there does seem to be a lack of LOVE for horror in this article. Do an article on horror films and their sequels by all means, but let's have someone writing it who sounds like they enjoy horror films. Any horror fan, even if they're feeling in superior mood should admit that ALL of these films should have had sequels. That's part of what makes being a horror film fan fun. The ... Read More

Some Crap, Some Good.
Yes, there are some there that sound and look crap. But I enjoyed Scream 3 and H20 because they were without doubt scary to me. Sure, there are some which should stop at one and that's it. But if they were successful and scarred a lot of people, I can't see why they tried more out. Good listing, Empire. Very interesting. ... Read More
