The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Trailer Breakdown
Welcome back to Middle-Earth

submit to reddit

The good thing about the onset of autumn this year is that it brings us ever closer to December – and with it, Peter Jackson’s latest Middle-Earth story in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. We saw the first trailer back last December but here at last is a follow-up and something of a companion piece. Let’s pore over it and see what we can spot, shall we? Spoilers, as ever in trailer breakdowns, may occur…

Far to the East, over ranges and rivers…

Gandalf’s voice-over at the beginning of this trailer is discussing the dwarves’ quest to “the single, solitary peak” of Erebor, the Lonely Mountain, to reclaim it from the dragon Smaug. But we think there’s something a little sneaky going on here: we think this image might feature Dol Guldur, there in the distance. Accounts of the fortress are sketchy: we know from the books that it’s built on a bare hill, overlooking the southern part of Mirkwood, and it contains pits for prisoners and a tower. This looks more ruined than we’d have imagined, but there was that shot in the first teaser of Gandalf on guard in a ruined courtyard, and we know he has travelled there.

1 RE: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Trailer Breakdown
what looks like John Callen’s Ori laying the smackdown on a goblin ne’er-do-well as the dwarves attempt to escape the goblin habitat. Callen plays Oin, not Ori. But great breakdown, thanks! More

L: rosiecotton Gimli: "If anyone was to ask for my opinion, which I note they're not, I'd say we were taking the long way 'round. My cousin BALIN would give us a royal welcome." I read the name on the breakdown and that's the first thing that popped into my head. lol!!! p; Correct, but Ori went with Balin when they recaptured Moria and it was he who wrote in the book. Note also that the battle with the orcs takes place next to the grave of "Balin, son of Fundin, Lord of Moria" and so he couldn't write the book as he was dead.   I have seen those films far too many times :) I've read the book quite a few too :D More

9 cave troll????
That's not a c ave troll in number 26. Look at the colour, and the crown on the head. If I'm not mistaken that is the Great Goblin King, as mo-capped and voiced by Barry Humphries. More

Eeek, someone needs to read up The Hobbit again for some of the details. In the book the 13 dwarves AND Bilbo are captured by the goblins and Gandalf follows unseen. But anyway, great breakdown. More
