Seven Great Movie Tennis Matches Move over Murray! We take a look at some memorable tennis moments from the movies.
Two weeks of Wimbledon starts today. But for on court drama, it can't compete with the movies. Here are seven movie TTT's (titanic tennis tussles) that put Federer, Murray, that American bloke who looks like Seann William Scott to shame. Quite please, cinema to serve. Play. WORDS IAN FREER
Seven Great Movie Tennis Matches Blow Up (1966) The Players: A male and female mime, dressed like a cross between Marceau Marceau and a Cbeebies presenter. Key Spectators: Fashion photographer Thomas (David Hemmings) and a growing crowd of '60s beatniks. Oh I Say! The mute players mime a game possibly better than a Federer-Nadal final set, making impossible shots with incredible ball footwork. When the female mime hits the ball over the fence, the camera pans along tracking the invisible ball along the grass. With a mime bearing down on him, Thomas reluctantly retrieves the ball and "throws" it back. Pillock. Tips for any younger players watching: If you can, play without the ball. Always makes those topspin lobs fall in.
