The Raid

DIRECTOR Gareth Evans
STARS Iko Uwais, Joe Taslim, Yayan Ruhian

For all of Hollywood's love of large-scale carnage and second unit-directed mayhem, the best action movie of the year – hell, of the last 20 years, and a strong contender for best of all time – was a small-scale affair that came from Indonesia and was directed by a bloke from Wales. But Gareth Evans is a Hong Kong action cinema nut, and boy does it show in The Raid, a non-stop battering ram of a movie that makes Hard Boiled look Over Easy. The plot is so nice 2012 used it twice – Dredd also pitted an unstoppable cop against hordes of killers in a tower block from which there is no escape – but Evans uses it as a framework for the most visceral action choreography in years. You will wince, you will exclaim "oof!" at numerous points, and you will marvel at the astonishing skills and fluidity of Evans' discovery, Iko Uwais, who takes on all comers with the grace and power of Chan/Lee/Jaa (insert your own comparison here). But it's not all wham bam: Evans conjures a strong sense of place, there's great suspense (the wall cavity scene is genius) and the plot twists and turns enough to make the currently-prepping sequel, Berandal, a mouthwatering prospect.

Totally agree with seven28uk - The Grey was brilliant, totally sucked me in and I have never researched so much about wolves until after seeing that film! Cabin in the Woods, although different, not exactly a film of the year top 20. I have only seen half of the films on the list - Headhunters a good call. Avengers, hmmmmmmmmmm.... Read More
