Magic Mike

DIRECTOR Steven Soderbergh
STARS Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, Alex Pettyfer

It's not about the jiggling and the thrusting, honestly. The secret of Magic Mike is not just that it's eye candy for the girls, the gays and those guys who spend a lot of time in the gym discussing whey protein and reps. The exact magic ingredient is a little harder to pin down, as you might expect from a Steven Soderbergh effort that falls somewhere between the glossy populism of Ocean's Eleven and the indie grit of The Girlfriend Experience. It's very funny, and surprisingly winning, carried along by the laid-back jock charm of Channing Tatum. But there are more serious questions about exploitation here – Olivia Munn's Joanna behaving like the caddish male here and telling Mike he just needs to "look pretty" – as well as some bigger questions about capitalism and America's current definition of success. Mike's slightly uncentred sense of responsibility is refocused during the film, and he's contrasted with Alex Pettyfer's Adam and his callow cruelty. In other words, this is a film that is beautiful on the inside. It really is his personality.

Totally agree with seven28uk - The Grey was brilliant, totally sucked me in and I have never researched so much about wolves until after seeing that film! Cabin in the Woods, although different, not exactly a film of the year top 20. I have only seen half of the films on the list - Headhunters a good call. Avengers, hmmmmmmmmmm.... Read More
