The Descendants

DIRECTOR Alexander Payne
STARS George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Matthew Lillard

To call an Alexander Payne movie bittersweet is like calling an Alexander Payne movie "a film directed by Alexander Payne", but if there's one adjective most suitable for the Sideways director's fifth feature, it's that. Telling the tale of a family man dealing with three midlife crisis-worthy problems – his comatose wife (and her secret affair), his difficult teenage daughter and the problem of what to do with the sale his family's vast tracks of Hawaiian land – it's dramatic, but not in an overtly dramatic way, and funny, but not in an overtly funny way. As mentioned previously, it's an Alexander Payne movie. For fans of his work, it's another triumph: a heartfelt, subtle, well-balanced film that manages to both show Hawaii as it really is – no slow motion beach babes, sorry – and demonstrate just how silly 587-time Handsome Man Of The Year looks when he runs in a pair of boat shoes. Asked about that moment in a Q&A, Clooney said: "You mean, when I gave up all masculinity? Alexander really liked it, which was unfortunate, as we ended up doing that about 40 more times from different angles." Sounds like something for the ultimate collector's Blu-ray…

Totally agree with seven28uk - The Grey was brilliant, totally sucked me in and I have never researched so much about wolves until after seeing that film! Cabin in the Woods, although different, not exactly a film of the year top 20. I have only seen half of the films on the list - Headhunters a good call. Avengers, hmmmmmmmmmm.... Read More
