Holy Motors

DIRECTOR Léos Carax
STARS Denis Lavant, Edith Scob, Eva Mendes

I went into this film during the final stretch of the Cannes Film Festival, bone-tired after a series of early starts, late nights and hustles up and down the Croisette. Fortunately, Holy Motors is like espresso for eyeballs. The surreal, amazing images come thick and fast: an opening shot of a cinema, its audience sunk into enchanted slumber; director Leos Carax, making a cameo to beckon you into his film; hero Monsieur Oscar(Denis Lavant) having melty cyber-sex with an alien; a hobo (also Lavant) eating flowers and then Eva Mendes' hair; Kyle Minogue belting out a number in an empty department store. This kind of thing could easily be insufferable. But Carax steers his camera through the insanity with sly humour, an eye for a mesmerising tableau, and a great ear too: a funky accordion interlude is one of 2012's top musical moments. Plaudits, too, for Lavant, who delivers one of the year's bravest and most balls-out performances, but likely won't be invited anywhere near the Oscars. Presumably in case he tries to eat a statuette.

Totally agree with seven28uk - The Grey was brilliant, totally sucked me in and I have never researched so much about wolves until after seeing that film! Cabin in the Woods, although different, not exactly a film of the year top 20. I have only seen half of the films on the list - Headhunters a good call. Avengers, hmmmmmmmmmm.... Read More
