Empire Essential: Michael Caine
In celebration of all things Caine, here's the legendary actor's essential movies.

Maurice Joseph Micklewhite, Jr. Sir Maurice. Sir Michael. The man, the myth, the legend... Clocking up over a hundred films to date, be they direct-to-video stinkers in the 90s, embarrassing flops in the 80s, Oscar winners or British classics, Michael Caine has brought that little sparkle to them all. His latest, Harry Brown, is no exception, making the eponymous gun-toting pensioner his own. And in celebration of all things Caine, here's his essential movies.

Empire Essential: Michael Caine
Zulu (1964)

"If 1200 men couldn't hold a defensive position this morning, what chance have we with 100?" - Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead

Primarily a bit-part actor at the time, Caine only got his breakthrough role of the stoic and stiff-upper-lipped Lieutenant Bromhead though sheer luck, admitting in his book 'Acting In Film' that Zulu's director, Cy Endfield, had told him, "That was the worst damn screen test I ever saw in my life. But you've got the part because we're leaving on Monday and we can't find anybody else." But it was Caine's starpower that shone through, eclipsing his higher-billed co-stars, Stanley Baker and Jack Hawkins.

I have to agree with many posters on here... Where the hell is The Prestige???? One of Sir Michaels greatest performances in my opinion... And I would also ditch Jaws and Swarm and add Without A Clue and A Bridge Too Far.. both classics - Without A Clue was a favourite of mine growing up... Oh, and as much as I love Sir Michael's performances... I really hate Woody Allen, so Hannah and Her Sisters would be out too... Just saying.... Read More

DEATHTRAP - A fantastic performance, with the highlight being his phone call to police after his wife has died. SLEUTH is my favorite film of his, full stop, but as a very wise poster said above me, DEATHTRAP is like an unofficial sequel and just as clever. Read More

4 1st: "Zulu" 2nd: "The Ipcress File"

In the case of the 1st (a true story) 11 Victoria Crosses awarded to soldiers in that battle; it stands, to this day, as one of my Great films depicting men in battle against overwhelming odds. I've probably seen it a dozen times. Michael was magnificent! So was the late Stanley Baker. #2: The flick opens w/ him getting out of bed ... the whole bloody screen is Out-of-Focus, until he reaches over to the end table and puts on his glasses! A nice touch! Does anybody remember? I identifed , being myself, severely myopic at the time (now, through the miracle of modern science, 'am 20-20! 'can finally get a pilot's license!). Also, in the " ... File", when he was being brain-washed, he had smuggled a bent, rusted nail with him into the "indoctrination" chamber ... this he used to self-inflict pain that defeated the efficacy of the ill-treatment he was receiving (I catalogued/"filed" this bit of intel ... should I ever find myself in similar circumstances ..Read More

8 Harry Brown is a Top Ten Contender

The plot may not be terribly original but Caine is exceptionally good in a truly brutal British Thriller. At 76 his starring roles may be numbered but like Eastwood in Gran Torino it shows that age can sometimes add emotional depth to characters making them a joy to watch. A few Caine films that haven't been mentioned - The Honorary Consul (still unavailable on DVD), The Fourth Protocol (with Pierce Brosnan), Silver Bears (with Cybill Shepherd & Jay Leno), Ashanti (always critically slammed but in truth a great late 70s adventure film with a stellar cast, Peter Ustinov, Rex Harrison etc) and while we talk casts he's great as part of the ensemble - A Bridge Too Far. As for Turkeys - forget Jaws 4.....why did he do The Actors (with Dylan Moran) a few years a go..terrible!..he was on such a good run with Cider House Rules & The Quiet American Read More

10 RE: Essentials you've missed
Posted on Monday November 16, 2009, 00:48 by Monkeyshaver
L: Sydney Schaeffer The Man Who Would Be King and The Ipcress File are probably my favourite Caines, but there's a few top flight efforts you've missed: Gambit Mona Lisa Without a Clue A Shock to the System (particularly underrated) Blood and Wine The Prestige And if you're going to pick a Caine stinker, Blame it on Rio is a better option than Jaws IV. Too Late the Hero also needs a nod for the immortal, "That man... was a bloody hero!" lly agree, they are all great movies. & if The Swarm & Jaws IV get in the list then what about The Island, with Caine up against a secret clan of inbred pirates, Oliver Stone's The Hand, & Bullseye with Michael Caine & Roger Moore, & Michael Caine & Roger Moore!! The remake of Sleuth is not a great movie but worth watching to see Caine take the Olivier role. & remember DON'T BLINK! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddUbsWnEVXM Read More

15 Films That Should Have Made The List...
Posted on Friday November 13, 2009, 17:01 by unionjack006
CALIFORNIA SUITE (1978) for which he should have received an Oscar nomination alongside his co-star Maggie Smith, who took home the Oscar for her performance. DRESSED TO KILL (1980) one of the best low-key Caine performances, with tightly controlled tension brimming just beneath the surface; exceptional work. DEATHTRAP (1982) for which he should have received an Oscar nomination - this is the real 'remake' of 'Sleuth', with Caine in the Olivier role, and it is one of the very best performances of his career. MONA LISA (1986) Caine at his menacing best - but no illusions here: the picture belongs to Hoskins, who steals every scene. A SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM (1990) for which he should have received an Oscar nomination - completely delicious; simply Caine at his best. BLOOD & WINE (1996) for which he should have received an Oscar nomination - astounding, towering performance; one of Caine's very best - how could you have left this one off you list?. LITTLE VOICE (1998) for which Read More

22 Great Guide to a Ruddy Legend
Posted on Thursday November 12, 2009, 19:47 by Blyman
Recently bought the Michael Caine boxset from Play for a bargain price of £7.50 (its gone up since) and I've loved every minute. Zulu and Ipcress are my favourites, Caine aso excels in the sequel Funeral in Berlin which is very entertaining if not as stylishly directed. Glad that Dirty Rotten Scoundrels got mentioned, it's a real guilty pleasure film for me, I dare anyone to not laugh at Caine whipping Steve Martins supposedly paralysed and painless legs. I can't wait to see Harry Brown, not to mention his appearance in Inception and Batman 3. Long live Michael Caine! Read More
