Eight 3D Movies We're Looking Forward To
3D has been around for donkey's years, but 2009 is really the year when directors and studios embrace the format that will have films comin' atcha, like Cleopatra. DreamWorks' Monsters Vs Aliens kicks it all off this weekend, but here's our guide to some of the goodies coming your way over the next couple of years.

Eight 3D Movies We're Looking Forward To
Avatar
This is it. The Big One. The game-changer. The seismic shift, according to one major Hollywood director whose identity we're not yet prepared to divulge. James Cameron's return to narrative filmmaking after almost twelve years' away seems set to return him to King Of The World status. Rumour has it that his long-gestating sci-fi epic, in which Sam Worthington's paraplegic Marine has his consciousness downloaded into an alien body, the Avatar of the title, on a beautiful faraway planet, is already the most expensive movie ever made, with a budget heading north of a reported $300 million. Cameron designed and built a new camera unit, and special effects system for the movie, which allows directors to see footage in 3D as they shoot, while the effects and nausea-free 3D treatment used in the movie itself has been rumoured to break new ground. It may not rival Titanic's take at the box office, but for sheer impact upon the film industry, this is going to be historic.

Cameron has been and will continue to be the most important innovator of the modern movies. I cant wait to see Avatar, and have a sensible level of confidence that it will be all that it is hyped to be given that all his other movies have, one way or another, astounded, re-invented, out grossed and out delivered most of the competition. Titanic may have had a heavy hand when it came to the truth and the romance, but as a tent pole movie that sought to fascinate through technology but above all entertain, it delivered in spades. It certainly isnt my favourite of his films, but who can argue how stunning the realising of that story was? Ones mans determination to wring every detail and to seek a new way of telling such a dramatic tale has found its place in film history and not just because of the box office triumph. I say stop carping and lets see what it brings, but if I was a betting man, Id lay good odds that Avatar will be every bit as era defining as it promises to be. Read More

3 Pixar every time!

This is the only film on the list I'll definitely watch (though the Tim Burton Alice is a probable, providing it's not musical!) Pixar have delivered every time (well, maybe not 'Cars') but with Pixar you know as much thought goes into story as it does into the animation. As for James Cameron, wasn't Titanic the most overrated steaming pile of the last 20 years? But it isn't 3D that makes me want to see 'Up.' The first 3D cinema craze was a result of the rise of TV in the 50s. This is more of the same only this time the competition is Hi-Def home cinema. If 3D doesn't catch on perhaps Hollywood will try Smellovision again... Read More

Personally, I'm not digging this whole 3D wave at all. Saw The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D a few months back, and wearing those frakking glasses just pisses the hell outta me. It's ridiculously gimmicky. Read More

Red/Green glasses are ancient history now. Films are in full colour  and use stereoscopic techniques and glasses. Go and see Monster vs Aliens in 3d if possible and you'll see the improvement. Amazing! Can't wait for Avatar. Read More

Monsters Vs Aliens was terrible. I started having my doubts in the first ten minutes when a character was using a paddle-ball (seriously?!). The film then continued to care only about having stuff flying at the screen. I have faith in Cameron, Burton and Lasseter though. Read More

I'm a bit worried about all this 3D stuff...I mean, when I go to the cinema I wanna watch a film, not go on a theme park ride. Saying that, I saw Mickey's Philarmagic at Magic Kingdom and it rocked! Except for the fat american woman singing along to all the songs behind me. Anyway, I suppose I'll just have to give the whole 3D thing a try. Star Wars 3D please... Read More

I just came back from a 2d screening of Monsters vs Aliens, and though the animation was good, every little bit that would have been 3d, was so entirely slap in the face obvious. Oh, and the story, I thought, was crap. I seriously hope that all these films don't fall into the gimmicky traps that this did. Read More
