Duncan Jones' Five Sci-fi Movies You Have To See Blade Runner (1982)
"My favourite sci-fi film is Blade Runner - I've seen it innumerable times. It does everything for me: it creates this entirely believable world; it's beautiful to look at; it has amazing special effects; and characters that stand out. They're slightly caricatured but they really fit into the vibrancy of that world. Rutger Hauer is incredible in it, as are Daryl Hannah and Harrison Ford, even though from the mixed stories I've heard, he wasn't that happy filming it. It all just clicks. My next film, Mute, is very inspired by it. It's set in a future Berlin which will look like a German version of Blade Runner's Los Angeles, albeit with a European sensibility - it'll look like a European city in the future. There's a connection between Mute and Blade Runner, but I've got some ideas that'll give it its own signature character. I'm not sure I'm going to give a particular year though, because that almost cuts the foundation out of the believability of the film. Rather than having people think, "I don't think that'll happen in 50 years or 100 years", I'm going to say, "This is a possible future...". That's a more interesting approach."

Great to see a young director respect such overlooked movies like Outland. I adore Alien and Outland and adore Jerry Goldsmith's fantastic scores for both who really set the tone. The good old days when they had living breathing sets that looked realistic. The time and effort that went into them really showed. Read More

Absolutely right. Alien is my favourite film of all time. I love this list and everything on it - can't fault the man - but Alien tops it in my view. Alien is a stand-out film and absolutely looks as authentic today as it did on release, which Scott somehow also achieves with Blade Runner before CGI allowed people to create future worlds much more easily. The characters are fantastic and there's tension between them before they even land on LV426. Read More

Outland is such an overlooked film; every word a true one. So brilliant and atmospheric... like he says, it's a plausible, living, breathing world on screen Read More
