Feature
The Biggest Doctor Who Jaw-Droppers
The Time Lord's biggest surprises over 50 years of TV

This past weekend’s Doctor Who episode, The Name Of The Doctor, featured a heck of a last minute reveal (which, for the spoiler phobic, we won’t discuss until the very last page of this feature, page 11). It’s hardly the first surprise that the Time Lord - or, if you will, Shock Doc - has delivered across his 50 years rattling around space-time. We take a look at some of our favourites…

The First Doctor Regenerates

Episode: The Tenth Planet
The Doctor: The first (William Hartnell)

One of the trademark elements of Who canon – which sees the main character regenerate when his body is too badly injured or otherwise affected to recover – was born out of 1960s BBC bootstrap practicality more than a desire to shock. With original Doctor William Hartnell’s health failing by 1966, the decision was made to replace him. Script editor Gerry Davis suggested the Doctor could die and return as someone else, with producer Innes Lloyd adding that it could happen regularly to renew our hero and facilitate re-casting when needed. So, in the final episode of The Tenth Planet, viewers were stunned by a process apparently modelled on a bad LSD trip as Hartnell ‘died’ and magically became Patrick Troughton.

21 A Battle of Wits
My favourite jaw-dropper is the cliffhanger for 'A Battle of Wits', the third episode of 'The Time Meddler' from 1965. Up until this point, everything points to the Doctor and his TARDIS being unique in the universe, and then Steven and Vicki discover that the Monk has his own TARDIS! More

22 Shocking Doctor Who!
Ha, ha, ha! And indeed, hurrah for Empire for putting the Doctor forefront for a wee time! Shocking moments for me that haven't been mentioned...."the Alliance was formed to save the Universe." "From who?" "From /u]]tor In a similar vein, Tom Baker tries to talk Davros out of meglalomania. ""Davros, if you really had the power to extinguish all non-Dalek life.. between your finger-tips...could you do it???. Really?? Could you? Could really do it?" " d that power?!o on and so forth] n my fingertips!ck! here we go]...es I think I could...I dctor. Empire mentioned the Valeyard. But it was Anthony Ainsley's Master that exposed the Valeyard during the Trial of a Timelord. The Master hates the Doctor,..but he hates the Valeyard even more..kinda of like that obnoxious guest on Alan Partridge's Knowing Me, Knowing You..."hello lesbians!" "I hate you, But I hate you even more". ! Shocking! More
