Most Disturbing Yuletide Movie Moments
Have yourself a terrifying Christmas…

Ah, Christmas. Time for family gatherings, eating too much and making sure you have the receipt for that lovely beige scarf that auntie Linda bought you. But the tradition of Xmas movies is also a huge one, and you can often judge someone's age based on the Chrimbo special or movie that played to fill space on the TV schedule each year. Some films are designed to warm your cockles and to make you feel good about the holiday season. Others? Not so much? With the big day fast approaching, we decided to look at some of the weirder moments, either from films that are otherwise amazing, or from some that really shouldn't have made it off Hollywood's naughty list...

Dystopian Xmas
Brazil (1985)

Brazil is festooned with references to Christmas like a well-strung tree, and Terry Gilliam set the film during the holiday season with a purpose: it allowed him to take pot shots at the commercialization of the traditions with glee. So you have a brass band out on the darkened megacity streets with a sign that labels us all "Consumers for Christ", sleigh bell-like audio preceding the arrival of shock troops, and, in the most upsetting moment, Peter Vaughn's scary Mr Helpmann visiting Sam in the asylum dressed as Santa.

1 Gremlins

I have to disagree about the Gremlins story being depressing. Through the entire story I (and a roomful of others) held our breaths until the fateful "And that's how I found out there was no Santa Claus..." and then we all laughed like none of us had ever laughed before. It's honestly the most hilariously ridiculous thing in the movie, and that's saying something. Read More

8 Scrooged
Posted on Wednesday December 16, 2009, 12:15 by Jack Spank
That's why Scrooged is my favourite chrimbo film. So may disturbing moments! The alternative Scrooged trailer: "Your life migth just depend on it" and also, the dead boss holding Bill Murray out the window and the worst bit, when he finds herman dead under the street. But it all makes the end so much better! Read More
