The Piano – Michael Nyman (1993)

The Piano
Composer: Michael Nyman
It’s not overstating things to a completely ridiculous degree when we assert that The Piano is Michael Nyman’s soundtrack. No disrespect to Jane Campion, Anna Paquin or Holly Hunter’s Oscar wins, or Harvey Keitel’s willy, but Nyman’s compositions have proved this film’s most enduring legacy, not least because they are the voice of the (mute) lead character; each composition her dialogue. Indeed, he wrote specifically for Hunter to play on-screen, even complexifying some pieces when he discovered the extent of her ivory-tickling proficiency. The result was elegant and beautiful yet, somehow, it lost out at the Academy Awards to Schindler’s List.

21 Yes, but...
These aren't designed as 'Greatest-of' lists or even compendiums of the scores we love the most. They sold more than 70m copies between them, dominated radio playlists and came attached to two huge hits. More

22 What a predictably boring selection for the 90's!
You left out some of the best soundtracks: Léon; The Straight Story; Se7en; The Thin Red Line; Grosse Pointe Blank; Cruel Intensions; Human Traffic; The Virgin Suicides; Kikujiro and instead you include Bodyguard and Titanic!? More
