The Shawshank Redemption – Thomas Newman (1995)

The Shawshank Redemption
Composer: Thomas Newman
With 11 nominations (including this year’s Skyfall) but no wins, Thomas Newman is one of Oscar’s perennial bridesmaids. His dad won nine of the little gold blighters, and while some would argue that Newman Jr.’s score to Frank Darabont’s jailbird classic deserved one, the wait goes on. His work here is something brilliantly, quintessentially ‘American’ that conjures Hollywood’s golden age in its optimistic theme, brooding atmospherics in New Fish and His Judgement Cometh, and May’s bluegrass clip to get the ball (and chain) rolling. It’s a more classical, arguably purer yin to American Beauty’s world-weary yang. Much emulated, it’s never been bettered – a lot like the film.

21 Yes, but...
These aren't designed as 'Greatest-of' lists or even compendiums of the scores we love the most. Without being all highfaluting, the aim is to try to capture a moment in time - in movies and popular culture - and like them or not, The Bodyguard and Titanic soundtracks were HUGE. They sold more than 70m copies between them, dominated radio playlists and came attached to two huge hits. More

22 What a predictably boring selection for the 90's!
You left out some of the best soundtracks: Léon; The Straight Story; Se7en; The Thin Red Line; Grosse Pointe Blank; Cruel Intensions; Human Traffic; The Virgin Suicides; Kikujiro and instead you include Bodyguard and Titanic!? More
