Lost In Translation (2003)

Lost In Translation
Composer: Various Artists
Sofia Coppola’s musical picks gave her ode to alienation a shimmering soundscape to accompany Bill and Scarlett on their lovelorn meander through each others’ lives. Along the way, it also became a soundtrack staple for shoegazing movie fans, thanks to Coppola’sNick Fury-like assemblage of indie heroes, including the distortion of My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields (S.H.I.E.L.D.S.?), the melodic melancholy of Air’s Alone In Kyoto, The Jesus And Mary Chain’s hot fuzz and the pep of Phoenix, band of future-hubbie Thomas Mars. And lo, the bar was raised for feedback-drenched soundtracks.

1 honourable mention
I would personally include the soundtrack to A Single Man in this list. More

2 Wonderful work but may I just say...
Where might Gladiator be?! I must say this is a fantastic compilation of decade defining soundtracks so first of all kudos to all the empire crew for that but seriously Gladiator is a much needed addition to this list. I also think 500 Days of Summer is an uplifting, appropriate choice. But hey, they're all good. Great list guys. More

3 RE:
Notably missing: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (better soundtrack than Fellowship or King) The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King The Matrix Reloaded Star Wars - Episode II: Attack of the Clones Star Wars - Episode III: Revenge of the Sith Pirates of the Caribbean (any of them) Batman Begins About half of these shouldn't even be here! 4 Gladiator
Gladiator is the main omission here - like at the Oscars CTHD won the Oscar, but Gladiator won the audience affection. More

5 Let The Right One In
I would've liked to see a mention of Johan Söderqvist's score for 'Let The Right One In' - I thought that was one of the best of recent years. More

I completely agree with TheoJ - Giacchino's work on Star Trek was some of his best to date and was only beaten by his work on Up (which, thankfully, is on this list). I personally think Return of the King was the best soundtrack out of the three LOTR films, but one thing I do not understand is the lack of Harry Potter - sure it's not oscar-worthy, but Williams yet again composed some of the most memorable themes in film history and it would be ridiculous to ignore 6 films worth of spell-binding (excuse the pun) and down-right spectacular musical scores. 8 STAR TREK???!!!!
Where in God's Name is Michael Giacchino's Star Trek score? It was incredibly original with echoes of Courage's and Goldmsith's works. Esp the new theme, end credits and hell bar talk!!!! More

9 THE FOUNTAIN
It's lack of inclusion here is borderline criminal. More

10 NO GLADIATOR?!?!
Hans Zimmer's score for gladiator should be included with tracks such as Now We Are Free with Lisa Gerard and Elysium. More

13 The Bourne Supremacy
Not only a superb score, but the amount of Powell-esq rhythms from other films of similar genre seem to take inspiration from this series. More

14 Inception
Nolan has to have a constant tone buzzing through the move because he cant direct or create tension to save his life. More

15 LOTR
I thought the Two Towers soundtrack was better than Fellowship. Obviously the main themes returned but Shore expanded on them wonderfully and really managed to evoke a living, breathing Middle Earth for this difficult 'middle' movie. Also... Punch Drunk Love should be on this list IMO. More

16 Um, James Newton Howard?
Isn't James Newton Howard also responsible for The Dark Knight soundtrack? And Batman Begins? More

19 A few others perhaps?
Gladiator was a biggy probably overshadowed by LotR. There were obviously others but not sure if they made an amazing impact, but I'll mention them anyway:- The Island, 28 Days/Weeks Later, Man on Fire + Transformers and Casino Royale at a push, there were others with some wicked tunes in but how much they defined the naughties is erm slim. Glad Sunshine made it though, that was terrific More
