Credit Crunch Casting
In these times of economic crisis and following the budget report, it is obvious that we will all have to make sacrifices. For us little people, this could mean not buying that new outfit, or shopping for own-brand baked beans in Lidl. But for the big boys at the movie studios, even more difficult decisions will have to be made. So Empire, always a beacon of help in difficult times, has put together this list of cheaper alternatives for the biggest stars in Hollywood - so that casting agents can make savvy budget busting choices, without leaving us wanting in the cinema.

Can't afford Johnny Depp? Get Russell Brand

Rumoured to have been offered nearly $56 million to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow, Depp is bankable Hollywood property. But Jerry Bruckheimer could slash the price of his swash-buckling pirate by casting British swagger-meister Russell Brand. Hes got the hair, the eyeliner, and that pre-Victorian vocabulary with suitably illustrious delivery. All he needs is a pair of long boots and a sword and its plain sailing from here on in. Plus Brand is dab hand at backcombing, if Tim Burton decided to revive Edward Scissorhands.

Kidman/Watts
Nicole Kidman is certainly a beautiful woman, but I'd take Naomi Watts over her for my movie any day, even at the same price. She certainly isn't Nicole's backup. ... Read More

I didn't like this article. I think Russell is Russell and Gerard is Gerard. For me both are good actors with theirs personalities. I have knew Gerard Butler and the more I know about him the more I like. He is not the best actor of the world neither Russell. Every one is every one. We don't have to compare people, is not polite in my opinion. Thanks. Marisa, from Brazil. ... Read More

What are you waiting for?
You guys at Empire should be waving such suggestions in the faces of the directors and film makers that you interview. Not only would it put some of these people on the map, it could theoretically make for better movies. The money they save on the casting, could be used to produce better sets or more compelling stories. ... Read More

She's actually English dispite the Aussie accent having been born and raised in the UK and only moving down under at 13 and then knowing what was good for her moving out in her early 20's. Brand in Pirates?
That would only be acceptable if he appeared in the opening scene and was immediatly made to dance a gallows jig for piracy (without having the chance to say a word), and Sparrow spent the entire film trying to find the guy who hung him and buy him a rum as a thank you for killing the annoying twat. ... Read More

Hmm.
You know, I heard through the grapevine that Russel Brand was actually being cast for Pirates, but as Cap'n Jack Sparrow's brother. Personally, I think it's brilliant, but the fact that Zac Efron is now playing Will Turner cancels it out. I guess I'll just have to bring a barf bag with me to see the movie. And possibly a stun gun to settle the screaming Zac Efron fan girls. ... Read More
