Schwag Spotlight: Transformers

Posted on Saturday July 25, 2009, 03:51 by James Dyer

And while we're touring the floor taking snaps of all the lovely little plastic items on offer, here's a look at some of the Autobots and Decepticons currently 'in disguise' around the Con.

Schwag Spotlight: Star Wars

Posted on Saturday July 25, 2009, 03:43 by James Dyer

It should come as no surprise that Comic-Con is almost packed to the rafters with Star Wars goodies, from outfits to figures and... well, basically any item you can imagine but with a Darth Vader face stuck on the front. I took the camera on a tour of some of the best items out there for your viewing pleasure. The Force is strong with this stuff...

Panel Report: Legion

Posted on Saturday July 25, 2009, 02:58 by James Dyer

A film that pretty much no one has heard of, let alone seen footage from, Legion has generated a fair share of buzz at this year’s Comic-Con. In part it’s to do with the enormous poster of Paul Bettany as the Archangel Michael holding a submachine gun that’s hanging in the entrance to the Convention Center. So, it’s with some anticipation that we nip back in to Hall H to see an exclusive clip.

The sequence starts with an Ice cream van driving through the desert. The driver steps out – it’s Doug Jones – but his arms stretch, his shoulders dislocate and his jaw extends before rushing towards the camera in a spider-like crab walk. This isn’t your average Mr Whippy. A voiceover talks of prophecy as a huge dust cloud blooms over the desert. We see Paul Bettany’s Archangel Michael in silhouette, his wings furled behind his back. Cut to Michael in the rain, screaming as he cuts off his wings with a knife. Blood pools in the rain and a runed

Panel Report: 24

Posted on Saturday July 25, 2009, 02:57 by James Dyer

With all the huge movie panels at Comic-Con it’s easy to forget that there’s a wealth of other exciting, geek-friendly events going on. Among the comic and video game panels are a line-up of top TV panels including Dexter, Lost, Heroes, True Blood and many, many more. Of course, since the Con gods cruelly schedule everything to clash, I’ve not had the chance to visit any of them thus far. Even the Farscape reunion panel (which I really wanted to attend) clashed with Warner Bros’ Jonah Hex panel and I was denied. This afternoon, though, I’ve managed to rope Helen into covering the second Disney 3D panel so that I can make the pilgrimage up to Ballroom 20 to see Jack Bauer in the flesh for the panel on 24.

As I’m sitting here waiting for Kiefer and co to arrive I’ll fill you in on the queue culture here at the con. If you’re here as a regular punter you can’t get in to ANYTHING without queuing for at least 2 hours (and often much, much longer).

Panel Report: The Disney/Pixar Presentation - now with bonus Studio Ghibli

Posted on Friday July 24, 2009, 21:13 by Helen O'Hara

For me at least, this was set to be a highlight of Comic-Con: John Lasseter presenting the upcoming films from Disney and Pixar, with Hayao Miyazaki attending to show us a taster of Ponyo on the Cliff as well. For an animation geek, it really doesn’t get much better than that, and sure enough, as the lights went down and we saw Toy Story 2’s space-set opening sequence in 3D (eye-poppingly good) it was clear this was one designed to make me just about faint with sheer delight.

Lasster himself was, as ever, the soul of charm as he said hello to the crowd (“The real test of the acoustics in here: is this shirt loud enough for the guys in the back row? If not, I can get a louder one.”) and explained the thinking behind the 3D double-bill of the Toy Story movies that’s hitting cinemas in October. “We’ve always made 3D films at Pixar; it’s just that theatres have finally caught up with us.”

He presented a new trailer for the

Schwag Spotlight: Twilight - Aiieeeeeeeeeee!!!

Posted on Thursday July 23, 2009, 22:55 by James Dyer

Not only were the screams of over-excited Twilight fans heard around the world but the canny vendors at the Con were prepared and ready to fleece them for every last cent of their hard-earned pocket money. A ridiculous assortment of Twilightabilia was on sale, from Edward Cullen scarves to backpacks, jewellery and even a Christmas stocking(!). Want your branded 'vampire girl' bracelets? Well look no further. Here's a complete gallery of all the vamp schwag on offer at the Con.

Panel Report: Avatar

Posted on Thursday July 23, 2009, 22:55 by James Dyer

If the New Moon panel was the must-see event for hormonal teenage girls, then the equivalent for the discerning film fan was the panel that followed directly afterwards. Movie-lovers, teenage and otherwise, hustled into the hall clutching their 3D glasses for a first glimpse at Avatar,  Jim Cameron’s first film in a decade and the cinematic event of this year’s Comic-Con.

I should mention at this point that Hall H is boasting a snazzy makeover since last year. Gone is the drab curtain backdrop on the stage, replaced by a monstrous HD screen, which has been outfitted to display 3D footage for the first time in Comic-Con’s history. Tron, Final Destination and the other 3D panels today were just the support acts, warming up the audience for the main event – the three-dimensional spectacular that is James Cameron’s Avatar.

Cameron walks out and commands everyone’s adaptation as he sets up 25 minutes of footage from a film 14 years in the

Panel Report: New Moon - Aiiieeeeeeeeeeeeee!!

Posted on Thursday July 23, 2009, 22:35 by James Dyer

You’ve got to feel a little sorry for the directors of Sony’s Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. They, Anna Faris and Andy Samberg all came out on stage only to be met with a decidedly disinterested response from the whole of Hall H. It’s no comment on the film, of course, but rather a case of very bad timing. Their panel is was scheduled during the Twilight hour, the unlucky slot prior to the New Moon panel, and the entire hall is packed with 6000 salivating Twi-Hards with little interest in anything that doesn’t involve floppy hair and smoldering looks . Of course it didn’t help that the cast literally walked out on stage and then walked straight off again – not the way to foster some Comic Con good will – but then it’s possible they judged it time to throw in the towel. That or Anna Faris wanted to make sure she bagged a seat.

Straight after they vacated the stage, Joe Dante showed up to introduce some footage from The Hole 3

Panel Report: A Christmas Carol, Alice In Wonderland and Tron Legacy

Posted on Thursday July 23, 2009, 20:55 by Helen O'Hara

Here’s a thing: trying to blog while wearing 3D glasses is seriously difficult. But I’m going to try. It’s the Disney 3D panel at Comic-Con 2009, and we’re promised Robert Zemeckis and Tim Burton as well as Disney 3D footage. For me at least it’s the first look at Tron, A Christmas Carol etc, and it’s also the guy who made Who Framed Roger Rabbit and the guy who made Edward Scissorhands, so I’m happy.

So here we go. The crowd’s so enthusiastic they make noises generally associated with an FA Cup final when the dude from Comic Con tells them where the toilets are.

Schwag Spotlight: Avatar Character And Alien Toys Revealed

Posted on Thursday July 23, 2009, 11:10 by Amar Vijay

There's a spectacular assortment of schwag on offer at the Comic-Con and it takes an almost Herculean act of wilpower not to mortgage your house, children and internal organs in order to drum up the cash to buy it all. Still, if you can't own every collector's artefact the Con has to offer you can always covet them from afar. Here begins the first of our Schwag Spotlights, showcasing all the exciting items available at the Con so you can see exactly what you're missing.

First up, the official tie-in toys from James Cameron's Avatar. Stalking the halls of Comic-Con, we were surprised to find that the first ever shot of Sigourney Weaver in Avatar would be on display in a cabinet on the box of her action figure. But sure enough, here is the first look at Dr. Grace Augustine. See the full gallery after the jump.

The Geeks Shall Inherit The Earth

Posted on Thursday July 23, 2009, 06:59 by James Dyer

Comic-Con doesn’t officially kick off until Thursday but try telling that to the thousands upon thousands of... well, let’s be honest, apocalyptically geeky punters who descended upon the Con today as if their very beards depended on it. From the moment the doors opened on preview night at 5:30pm, there was a stampede of eager beavers desperate to get their greedy hands on the very best merchandise, figurines and 785-sided di the Con had to offer. It was, in a word, carnage.

Even Empire’s little stall (booth 4118 and if you drop by for god’s sake bring them a drink and some kind of frozen snack or they won’t last the weekend) was inundated with people keen to snap up subscriptions to the World’s Best Movie MagazineTM. None of the panels or Q&A sessions start until tomorrow so preview night is all about the booty. Be it Star Wars maquettes, new Transformers, movie props, signed merchandise or... well, anything else you can imagine, there’s some ki

The Con Is On!

Posted on Wednesday July 22, 2009, 03:04 by James Dyer

Yes, team Empire has finally touched down in sunny San Diego, having braved all manner of trials and tribulations to arrive in time for this year's Comic-Con International. Those of you who have been following our epic journey at #empiremagazine on Twitter will know that we've overcome obstacles that would have made Odysseus blanche and turn Phileas Fogg into a housebound agoraphobic.

We struggled through traffic on the 405, braved a convenience store that only sold Pepsi (what's that about?) and have (so far) survived a nasty case of (probable) swine flu I managed to pick up on the plane. Of course Nick's not quite made it yet, having missed one flight, had a second delayed and had his baggage stolen, but there are always a few who fall by the wayside and what's one film critic's life when compared to the sacred duty of bringing up-to-the-minute Con coverage to the Empire readership.
