 | Schwag Spotlight: Superhero Schwag
Posted on Sunday July 26, 2009, 16:18 by James Dyer
| | | | Of all the figurines, T-shirts, props and articulated Admiral Ackbars, there's one line of schwag that dominates all others. Yes, we're talking about comic book superheroes. Whether it's Marvel, DC, Vertigo, Dark Horse or any of the countless other publisthers out there, the stars of their graphic novels are scattered everywhere at the Con. You can't so much as turn your head without being assaulted by visions of tights, capes and crotch-hugging Lycra. Here's a small sampling. | | | Continue reading... | | Comment Now | | | |

 | Doctor Who Vs Predator
Posted on Sunday July 26, 2009, 09:27 by James Dyer
| | | | Daleks? Cybermen? Merely pawns in the grand scheme of things. While picking up a latte in the foyer of our hotel, Empire discovered The Doctor's true nemesis. As we watched, the looming Predator walked up to the Time Lord, clenched its fists, glared down at him and said "Dude, you're Doctor Who!" "Yes," replied David Tennant. "Yes I am".

 | Panel Report: Iron Man 2
Posted on Sunday July 26, 2009, 04:00 by James Dyer
| | | | Two years ago, the Iron Man crew swept into San Diego and wowed the massed geeks with early footage. Would their return in 2009 get a similarly ecstatic reaction? Well, yes. With wowsy footage and a hilarious panel, it can definitely be classed a triumphant return A beaming Jon Favreau was first to appear, striding on stage to the backing track of Black Sabbath’s Iron Man. He saluted the absolutely packed Hall H — even highly-regarded Iron Man artist Bob Laylon had trouble getting in — then cued up a short promo reel with glimpses of behind-the-scenes action. “Sorry, guys, but that’s all we could put together in time,” he explained when the applause died down. “We only wrapped last week and...” Suddenly he was interrupted by a Twilight-level cacophony of screams. The cause? An ice-cool-looking Robert Downey, clad in Tony Stark suit and sunglasses, who’d strolled in from the wings, feigning dissatisfaction. “Who, whoa, w | | | Continue reading... | | Comment Now (3 comments) | | | |

 | Panel Report: Extract
Posted on Saturday July 25, 2009, 22:32 by James Dyer
| | | | Being fans of both Arrested Development and Office Space, we were rather excited when comedy titans Jason Bateman and Mike Judge arrived to plug Extract, Judge’s new indie laugher. Bateman was a mite bleary-eyed, having flown out from the New Mexico set of Paul at 5am after a full night’s shooting — “I’ve had one hour of sleep, so I apologise for anything I might say.” He explained that Kristen Wiig, who plays his character’s wife in the film, was also meant to be here, but, alas, was stuck on the Paul set after her scenes overran. The gorgeous Mila Kunis was able to attend, though, and the three of them introduced some very funny footage. The movie revolves around an extract-factory manager called Joel (Bateman), whose best friend is druggy bartender Dean (Ben Affleck), and who is having some marital trouble — his wife allows a very slim window of opportunity for sex (when she puts her sweatpants on at 8pm, it’s no-go), and a stunning | | | Continue reading... | | Comment Now | | | |

 | Panel Report: Solomon Kane
Posted on Saturday July 25, 2009, 21:49 by James Dyer
| | | | When he wasn’t writing Conan stories, fantasy writer Robert E. Howard turned out a series of pulpy adventures featuring Solomon Kane, a 16th century Puritan asskicker with a slouch hat, two flintlock pistols and a whole lot of attitude. And finally Solomon’s getting his own movie, with the ace James Purefoy (best known for his reptilian Mark Anthony in HBO’s Rome) in the hero role and Michael J. Bassett directing. The two of them, along with producer Samuel Hadida, graced Hall H to give the crowd a first look at the movie. Our verdict? This could be devilishly fun. The Puritan pugilist’s mission is to hunt down evil spirits and send them packing back to hell, leading to a heck of a lot of supernatural-tinged combat. We see him wielding twin swords against a burly beserker wearing a mask of human skin, taking on a 20-foot-tall flame-demon, and dispensing the line, “If I kill you, my soul is bound for hell… But that’s a price I’ll gladly pay.” | | | Continue reading... | | Comment Now (1 comment) | | | |
