Cannes 2008: Epilogue
Posted on Tuesday May 27, 2008, 08:59 by Damon Wise
Well, everyone has gone (apart from us), the posters are coming down, the locals are being slightly nicer and the front of house security staff are going back to wherever it is they go to learn to be so impossible to deal with. And as the dust is settling, it's time to reflect on the division of prizes, which, like the title of the surprisingly amiable Barry Levinson movie-about-movies that closed the event, jury president Sean Penn promised would leave us thinking What Just Happened? Well, the first surprise was actually a relief: there was only an acting prize for Steven Soderbergh's Che. Soderbergh's loosey-goosey sketch of the rise of the Argentinian rebel leader has been something of a cause celebre since it screened last Wednesday evening (or rather, at 270 minutes, it WAS last Wednesday evening). True, it had some moments, but the fact remains that the film really was not finished. Or should that be films, plural? Even now, nobody really knows what's going on with Che, me... Read more... If you go down to the Market today, you're in for a big surprise... yes, today's installment of Empire's Cannes Videblogisodes sees Chris Hewitt venture down to the bewildering Rubik's Cube that is the Cannes Film Market, and try to make sense of it all. Luckily, he has help from FrightFest's Alan Jones, Paul McEvoy and Johanna Salomaki in the blog that may be low on gags, but makes up for it with pluck, spirit and spunk! ...Read more... Back To TopSynecdoche, New York Is A Very Nice Place To Be
Posted on Friday May 23, 2008, 16:55 by Damon Wise
Day nine and the festival is really winding down now. The market is about to close and most of the Hollywood execs have flown back to the US, leaving a substantially reduced level of industry chatter on the Croisette. Traditionally, Cannes is front-loaded with the higher-profile movies, which means that most people have gone home by the time the last few competition films unspool. Last year was the exception – Palme D'Or winner 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days screened early on, on just the second day – but quite often the winning film screens on the last weekend. Which is why we went into Charlie Kaufman's directorial debut Synecdoche, New York with mixed feelings. On the one hand, bad buzz from a recent trade screening made us wonder if the film was being deliberately buried at the end of the festival, while on the other hand, the jury's selections can come out of left-field and seldom square with the opinions of the world's press, who often miss the winner if they leave too early. ...Read more... Back To TopQT Chats And There's A Whole Lotta Che Going On
Posted on Thursday May 22, 2008, 19:25 by Damon Wise
Day nine is the day that Quentin Tarantino came flying in to deliver the Leçon De Cinema, a masterclass that in the recent past has been given by such luminaries as Martin Scorsese and Stephen Frears. Getting in was a nightmare, since the festival's security is, most of the time, the rudest and most unpleasant in the whole film festival atlas, even to ticket holders such as us. Still, it gave the afternoon a sense of occasion, and QT received a joyous standing ovation as he bounded down the steps to take his seat, dressed from head to toe in black, wearing a shiny, thin-lapelled jacket and pointy shoes. Moderator for the afternoon was film critic for French magazine Positif, Michel Ciment, a decent host for the most part, but unquestioning of some of QT's responses and almost blank on the subject of Death Proof (he didn't seem to know Zoe Bell was a stuntwoman). As a result, the latter part of the interview wasn't so hot, as Ciment seemed to be in a hurry to get through all five films in the ... Read more... Comment Now (3 comments)
