Bad Education (2004)

In the hands of anyone but Pedro Almod�var a tale of sexual abuse, Catholic guilt, transsexuality and drug abuse might have been a, well, heavy-going way to kick of the festival. But such is the Spaniard's lightness of touch that Bad Education, a spiralling film noir spanning decades, proved an unusually vibrant opening. "To play the part of the person who opens the curtain is a prize in itself," said Almod�var of the screening, hinting at his so-far unconsummated love affair with Cannes. But while he's still to win a Palme d'Or, the honour of opening the festival would clearly do for starters.
