7. Licence To Kill
From: Licence To Kill (1989)
Performed by: Gladys Knight
We've got quite a soft spot for the themes from both Timbo Dalton films, but when pressed, we'd have to plump for this cheesetastic Bond-goes-AOR tune, written by Knight and the late, great Michael Kamen, and which was a late choice, pipping Eric Clapton and Vic Flick's revamp of the Bond theme. Virtually ignoring the fact that this is a Bond theme, this is in fact a love song (hardly fitting, considering that love is one element almost entirely absent from one of the darkest Bond themes), but wishy-washy lyrics aside, it's got a strong memorable melody, a catchy middle eight which builds to a truly impressive crescendo, and a brass refrain that was 'based' on Goldfinger. So 'based', in fact, that lawsuits were filed.
Best lyrics: "Say that somebody tries to make a move on you / In the blink of an eye, I will be there too / And they better know why I'm gonna make them 'em pay Till their dying day"
