9. Richard Burton
Nearly Bond in: Dr. No
At the peak of his powers in 1962, Burton would have made a great Bond, but was more interested in 'serious' acting roles. And drinking. And (soon after) Elizabeth Taylor.
10. David Niven
Nearly Bond in: Dr. No
Ian Fleming recommended him for the role, but producer Harry Saltzman felt he was too old. Niven got a crack at it, however, playing Sir James Bond in the "unofficial", comic Casino Royale of 1967.
11. Roger Moore
Nearly Bond in: Dr. No, On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Moore was Ian Fleming's second choice after David Niven to play Bond, but he was at first either unavailable (the producers' story) or never approached (Moore's story). By the time On Her Majesty's Secret Service rolled around, Moore was contracted to The Saint, and wouldn't take up the role til Live and Let Die four years later.
