Another prolific British star, Sexy Rexy (as he became known) certainly had the sex appeal, but was 54 in 1962, which producers considered too old.
6. Richard Johnson
Nearly Bond in: Dr. No
According to some, Johnson turned down the role of Bond as he didn't want to commit to a multi-picture deal. But he later played a Bond-esque detective Hugh "Bulldog" Drummond in two films in the late Sixties.
7. William Franklyn
Nearly Bond in: Dr. No
Franklyn was starring in TV series Top Secret at the time, which may have hurt his chances, as people associated him with the role of spy Peter Dallas rather than Bond, James Bond.
8. Ian Hendry
Nearly Bond in: Dr. No
The star of The Avengers was too famously associated with his role as Dr David Keel in that series to be the blank slate that the Bond producers needed.
