We're not sure that he was a serious contender but the Indian heartthrob expressed an interest in the role. But the Mumbai Brad Pitt didn't get it - shame, as he would certainly have been an reinvention for the iconic spy.

39. Colin Farrell

Farrell is dark enough, and a good enough actor, that he was Pierce Brosnan's choice to succeed him as Bond. That said, Brosnan was maybe trying to continue the Celtic dominance of the character, and in the end Farrell said that they should find "someone the audience had no history with".

Nearly Bond in: Casino Royale
Butler mentioned becoming Bond on GMTV and sparked a fury of casting rumours around the globe that he was in the running - but the fact that he said he wanted Ann Widdecombe to be his Bond girl might have tipped people off that he wasn't entirely serious.
