Picture-in-picture
Also known as ‘Bonus View’ or P-I-P, this allows you to see a second video stream while watching the main film, perhaps showing storyboards, behind-the-scenes footage or video commentary. Not to be confused with P-I-G, picture-in-graphics, where the picture size is reduced to show you trivia and graphics on the surrounding screen, or G-I-P, graphics-inpicture, whereby graphics appear over the film for an enhanced ‘trivia-track’ experience.
Blu-meter
A nifty timeline that appears when you fast-forward or rewind, to show how far through the film you are.
Bookmarks
Mark your favourite parts of the movie with up to 25 semi-permanent bookmarks that will be stored in your machine even when the disc is ejected.
BD hybrid disc
A disc which contains both movie and PS3 playable game content.
BD-Live
This interactive online feature allows you to use an Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to access extra content and previews.
Pop-up menus
Menus you can access to navigate disc features without leaving the film.
DTS audio/Dolby Digital audio/Dolby Digital Plus/Dolby TrueHD
The four main surround sound formats used on Blu-ray discs — the last two are generally considered the best, and are increasingly available as more films come out on Blu-ray.
HDMI 1.3
The sort of digital and audio cable you’ll need for the best possible Blu-ray viewing and listening experience. Failing this, HDMI 1.2 will do the job.
Backwards compatible
This means that your Blu-ray player will play your DVDs as well; it’s ‘backwards compatible’ with the older technology.
Bonus Digital Copy
This means that the Blu-ray disc contains a version of the film that’s transferable to a portable device like an iPod or PSP.
