A Beginner's Guide To Bill Hicks Goodbye You Lizard Scum
Despite being pre-approved - twice - by CBS execs, the Letterman sketch Hicks was due to broadcast in late October 1993 was removed from the show by the host. The censorship led him to pen a furious 39-page letter to New Yorker journalist John Lahr. It would be his last appearance - Hicks' pancreatic cancer claimed him on February 26, 1994. His last words were testimony to an optimist who always burned with passion. "I left in love, in laughter, and in truth and wherever truth, love and laughter abide, I am there in spirit." Sixteen years and a David Letterman mea culpa later, that routine finally made it to the air.
