Slumdog Bags The BAFTAs
The Empire team let out a heartfelt cheer this evening as Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire romped to victory at the BAFTAs. Scooping a total of seven gongs, including Best Film, Best Director and best Adapted Screenplay. Coming in a distant second was The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, with three awards, but by any standard tonight was Slumdog's night.

Kate Winslet added yet another shiny ornament for her mantelpiece, scooping Best Actress. Nominated for both Revolutionary Road and The Reader, Winslet picked up the award for the latter, fears of a split vote proving unfounded. Penelope Cruz took Best Supporting Actor for her role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Mickey Rourke seemed genuinely humbled when he took the stage to accept Best Actor for The Wrestler and also won Empire's honorary award for best speech of the evening when he thanked Darren Aronofsky for taking a chance on him after he'd spent a great many years “fucking up” his career. Finally, in the least surprising moment ever, Heath Ledger's phenomenal turn as The Joker in Chris Nolan's The Dark Knight was recognised as Ledger received a posthumous award for Best Supporting Actor.

Jackman was GREAT!!
Hugh Jackman was definitely the best host The Oscars could have ever had...he can certainly dance thats for sure (The Reader anybody? lol). But honestly what were Daniel Craig and SJP doing? SJP sounded like she had a lisp and Daniel sounded a monotoned...shame really for a guy who has reinvented the best spy around (ok so Bourne IS the BEST spy around). Kate Winslet finally getting her Oscar (YESSS!!!) I didnt see this cos I went to bed after Heath's award was announced (about time!!) Oth... Read More

Franco was funny
Just the moment he saw himself kissing Penn, then moved his arm around Rogen was nice, though it was all kinda dull. Still, Fey and Martin do great together, except that 30 Rock episode, seemed a little bland and overblown, here's hoping those two and Gervais could triple team an Oscar ceremony next year, edgy, coarsish and actually funny, the stuff we like but Hollywood is afraid will alienate viewers. Screw viewers, they watch Lost, Lost for goodness sake. ... Read More

Jackman Was The Best!
I have a soft spot for Hugh Jackman and thought he did a great job as the presenter of the Oscars. He bought huge ammounts of charsmia, jokes and songs with the A-Listers tapping their toes to the beat. He should get ten out of ten, without doubt. Funny about Ben Stiller joking Joaquin Phoenix, total genius. And as for his other presenter, Natalie Portman looked stunning in her dress. My sister was over the moon that Rob Patterson was there and found him "Fit" Whatever. The crappist wa... Read More

I'm very glad Wall-e one best animated film. I was quite worried for it at the BAFTAs, being pitted against 2 other very well reviewed films, but thank god it won out there. I don't think Persepolis (which, dayglowjoe, was nominated last year at the Oscars) or Waltz with Bashir, however good they are, should have won, or even considered, some might find the black and white of Persepolis haunting, or beautiful and something similar for Waltz, but to me, It should be teh film with the best animati... Read More

Slumdog deserved the attention it recieved. Mickey and Danny get the award for best speeches. I agree with tres long though because The Dark Knight was seriously overlooked. Considering Slumdog is one superb film it did deserve every award it recieved ... Read More

the dark knight was robbed
i feel let down but the winning categories here. i do ont know if this is due to politcs or what but i think batman has been serverly over looked. do people realise that comic book movies can be about more than a guy in a fancy suit beating people up? sorry bafta but i think its a joke. Mickey Rourke though was pretty awesome in The Wrestler. ... Read More

Good for Man On Wire
Man On Wire is for me certainly one of the best films of 2008. It was a real pleasure and I'm glad it is acknowledged. Also it's great for Noel Clarke. I thought he was much younger; however I enjoyed both kid and adulthood. I've been meaning to but have yet to watch Slumdog Millionaire. I hope it is as good as the pundits say it is. Also, most may not agree with me but I was hoping Downey Jr won the supporting actor gong. I was disappointed with Tropic Thunder but it was Downey Jr and To... Read More

Best film or Best British film?
I understand that they are probably voted for by different people but it surely makes no sense for Slumdog to win Best overall film but not win Best British film. There is a bit of a contradiction there methinks. ... Read More

cool, all i hope is that they are up to the task of pulling off 'normal' looking people, i also wanna know what this is going to be tonally? Is it gonna be kiddy or is it going to go down the route of stuff like Beowolf and be more 'adult'. Also 1906 sounds pretty cool, but again i wanna know about the tone. Cos lets be honest it could just be about a rat or something in the earthquake. ... Read More

They can probably pull it off well anyways but being Pixar they'll probably do something groundbreaking and different aswell. Perhaps now they've roundhouse kicked 2-D animation of the planet they are ready to replace live-action filmmaking also, en route to world domination.... ... Read More
