This ornate interior gives the best indication of the theatrical construct at the heart of Wright's film. Pulleys were pulled and backdrops lifted, keeping the story moving with the elegance of a velvet-lined carriage. Charlie Kaufman's Synecdoche, New York was a reference point for Wright, just as Powell and Pressburger was for his cinematographer. "He would push the boat out to explore."
