Despite colossal changes to the movie's structure, the 130-page script remained just as Stoppard wrote it - meaning no room for artifice or over-tooled performances. "There could be no hint of self-consciousness," stresses producer Paul Webster. "The theatricality of the vision had to be of a piece with the seriousness of the actor's performances." The director, here chatting with his Anna, old Pride & Prejudice and Atonement pal Keira Knightley, describes the story as "a search for the authentic life".
