With only two months to prep the film's 100 different physical sets, the crew at Shepperton Studios – now renamed 'Шеппертоn Studios' (we assume) – got to work. "The overriding conceit of the derelict theatre is that this society is on its way out," explains the director's long-time production designer Sarah Greenwood. "Gilding was important, but everything within is fake. Joe came back from St. Petersburg noting that what might look like marble was actually plaster."
