DreamWorks Animation

Based
Glendale, California

Founded
1994

Achievements
Winner of the first ever Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2001 with Shrek, since then DreamWorks Animation has struggled against behemoths Pixar for the big awards, though earning megabucks from the Shrek and Madagascar franchises probably makes it all right.

Most successful film financially
As the most financially successful animated film of all time, Shrek 2 wipes the floor with its competitors, hoovering up $919,838,758 plus, with its sequel close behind with $794,561,223 in the bank.

What's next?
Two Shrek sequels are planned, the first being called Shrek Forever After (July 2010), where Rumpelstiltskin (now voiced my Paul McCartney) tricks Shrek into signing a pact that transports him into an alternate universe where he hasn't met Fiona, ogres are hunted and, surprise, surprise, Rumplestiltskin is king.

Shrek spin-off Puss in Boots: Story of an Ogre Killer is planned for 2011, written as a prequel for Antonio Banderas' character, and will include Salma Hayek voicing Puss's love interest, Kitty.

Kung Fu Panda 2: The Kaboom Of Doom (2011) follows up on the original's success with a story of a weapon so powerful it threatens to destroy the very nature of Kung Fu. Po and the four masters are there to save to day, fortunately.

How To Train Your Dragon Concept Art
Viking fantasy How To Train Your Dragon is the next DreamWorks film due out March 2010, where young Viking Hiccup makes friends with an injured dragon - which makes life difficult as his tribe loves to kill the flying blighters.

Interesting fact
Shrek was originally voiced by Saturday Night Live legend Chris Farley, but died just after he recorded his lines. He was replaced by Mike Myers, who based his accent on the voice his mother used when reading him bedside stories as a child.

I love Pixar movies and other animated movies. i think Pixar xan pull it off, it is a huge risk because there will be comparisons but Pixar are great and can pull it off. Hope dreamworks can withs hrek and kung fu panda. theys hould make an incredibals 2, the ending of the first one left a great possibility for a sequel. Read More

6 What's with all the sequels?
Posted on Friday October 9, 2009, 18:18 by ecco
I'm a huge fan of all styles of animation, but is anyone else finding all these sequels a little tiresome? It's as though it's more about finding a cash cow and milking it for all it's worth than actually making good films with great stories. If I had to pick a favourite it'd be Pixar, and hopefully Lasseter can breathe life back into Disney. Also love Ghibli and Aardman, though. Read More
