The Who's Who of Animation Studios
Your crib sheet to the cartoons comin' up

In celebration of all things computer generated in film, we've provided you lucky people with a cheat sheet to all the major animating houses in the world. We're too good to you, we know.

WORDS ALASTAIR PLUMB

Pixar Animation Studios

Based
Emeryville, California

Founded
1986

Achievements
Since the award's inception in 2001, Pixar has won four Best Animated Film Oscars with Finding Nemo (2003), The Incredibles (2004), Ratatouille (2007), and WALL-E (2008).

Most successful film financially
Finding Nemo, which took over $800 million worldwide.

What's next?
Besides Toy Story 1 & 2 in 3D (later this year), there's Toy Story 3 (July 2010), where Andy goes to college and only takes Woody with him, with the rest of the gang ending up going second-hand to a kindergarten. Fortunately for Buzz and co, Woody comes back to save them. It's what he does.

Toy Story 3 | Cars 2 | The Bear And The Bow
Cars 2 (Summer 2011) sees Lightning McQueen and Mater travelling across the world for a international Grand Prix and somehow getting wrapped up in a spy story involving a secret agent-cum-Aston Martin called, brilliantly, Finn McMissile.

The Bear and the Bow (Winter 2011) stars Reese Witherspoon, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson and Julie Walters in a story about a young Scottish princess (Winterspoon) who renounces her family and decides to become... an archer. Nope, we didn't see that one coming either.

Further out: Newt and Monsters Inc. 2

Interesting fact
The company only moved into making animations after creating shorts to demonstrate the power of the hardware they made, ('The Pixar Image Computer'), and so Luxo Jr was born.

I love Pixar movies and other animated movies. i think Pixar xan pull it off, it is a huge risk because there will be comparisons but Pixar are great and can pull it off. Hope dreamworks can withs hrek and kung fu panda. theys hould make an incredibals 2, the ending of the first one left a great possibility for a sequel. Read More

6 What's with all the sequels?
Posted on Friday October 9, 2009, 18:18 by ecco
I'm a huge fan of all styles of animation, but is anyone else finding all these sequels a little tiresome? It's as though it's more about finding a cash cow and milking it for all it's worth than actually making good films with great stories. If I had to pick a favourite it'd be Pixar, and hopefully Lasseter can breathe life back into Disney. Also love Ghibli and Aardman, though. Read More
