Androids In Hollywood
The most memorable synthetic humans in the movies

From the creepy pseudo-humans of The Stepford Wives to the psycho-killers of The Terminator, robot people are a source of endless fascination for filmmakers - possibly because they're a cheap focus for a sci-fi film. Here, for your delectation, are some of the landmark androids in cinema history.

The Stepford Wives
The Robots: The Stepford Wives

Let's ignore the 2004 remake because: 1. It's crap. 2. It has a happy ending 3. It turns out that the wives aren't androids, but simply had chips implanted that could be switched off (which makes no sense given that they have magic inflating/deflating breasts). All in all, it ruins the whole point of the 1975 cult classic, in which the majority of the wives of small-town Stepford are robot doubles of their murdered human counterparts. A sci-fi horror like no other, though erroneously rehashed and ripped off time and again, the wives stick with you for long after you've watched the film, if only because of the robot Joanna's unfinished, black, petrifying eyes.

Not read all the other posts, but where the hell is Don Opper's MAX 404 from Android (1982)? Surely a film that is about exactly what is says on the tin. Glaring omission, especially when you include Dr Sodding Goldfoot. TAKE THE SHAME, EMPIRE. Read More

LOL I agree totally that to be memorable it does not have to be a good film, my point was that Empire impiled that the film was so bad you needed to have an AI android to watch it for you, meaning that the film shouldnt be memorable to a film goer Read More

The heading says Aliens but the picture is from Alien!! Seems from the number of poor comments this wasn't a very well thought out article was it Empire? Although in your defense of having terminators you do have a subheading saying referring to synthetic humans, which you could argue will include the cyborg terminators. And dholleyuk - the film does not need to be good for a component of it to be memorable. Some of the worst films around have many memorable moments and characters. Batman and Robin has some of Arnie's funniest and most memorable lines because they are shit. The film doesn't deserve more stars though. On the other hand where the hell is Data? Read More

Ilia probe from Star Trek 1?Edward Scissorhands, to name a few, EMPIRE GET A GRIP AND KNOW YOUR FILMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Read More
