Five Actors Turned Politicians Kal Penn has announced his shock decision to leave acting aside, for now, to join Barack Obamas staff at the White House. But hes not the first actor to go into politics...
Five Actors Turned Politicians Ronald Reagan
The big daddy of actors-turned-politicians, Reagan was a decent actor with a middling career in churned-out Westerns and crappy B-movies, with Don Siegels The Killers the highlight of his career. From an early point, though, he was attracted to politics he was president of the Screen Actors Guild and was a spokesman for General Electric. Initially, he started political life as a Democrat, before switching to the Republican Party in 1962, and became Governor of California in 1968. The biggest job of them all President of the United States of America followed in 1980, a position which he held for two terms. Reagans tenure at the White House has attracted its fair share of criticism, mainly for the introduction of Reaganomics, which some see as the tiny acorn that has led to the mighty oak of the current economic crisis. But theres no doubt that his work in bringing the Cold War to an end established a long-lasting legacy; he was also one of the most popular Presidents in recent memory.
