Beetlejuice
Possibly the director's most universally beloved film - really, who doesn't love a socket-haired bio-exorcist? - Beetlejuice mixes suburban fairytale, gothic horror, giant Saturn sandworms and Harry Belafonte singing about bananas into something unheard of at the time: a stream-of-consciousness, deliriously cheesy B movie that sold at the box office. Burton's first forays into stop-motion and blue screen give it a timelessly homemade feel, while the casting is pitch-perfect: Michael Keaton, Catherine O'Hara, Winona Ryder, Geena Davis and Jeffrey Jones all gleefully pitching themselves into the fun. Strange to think, though, that Betelgeuse could have been Sammy Davis Jr., Burton's first choice for the role.
