Sweeney Todd
One hell of a long time coming, this film version of Stephen Sondheim's devilish musical took 25 years to come into being - and only after Burton carefully explained his vision to Sondheim and granted him ultimate cast approval apart from our man Johnny, who he insisted be on board, despite never having sung before on film. In fact, he didn't realise he'd have to sing live at first, saying, "I thought I'd just get on set and lip-synch. It was mortifying." To avoid accusations of nepotism, Helena Bonham-Carter sent 12 tapes of herself singing to Sondheim to prove her worth - and Sacha Baron Cohen, playing Adolfo Pirelli, sang the whole score of Fiddler On The Roof to get the part. A good while in the making, sure, but there was a whole of lot love in those meat pies, and no mistake.
