The A To Z Of Richard Curtis | The Etceteras

The Etceteras

Less heralded than Cambridge's Footlights, Oxford University's The Etceteras still unleashed Curtis, Rowan Atkinson and their musical whizz Howard Goodall (all pictured) on the world. John Lloyd, who'd work with the trio on Not The Nine O'Clock News and Blackadder, stumbled upon them in 1976. "I was producing the Brian Matthew for Radio 2 show when I saw this two-man show at the Oxford revue," he remembers. "Rowan was doing the funny stuff, Richard was the stooge and I was blown away by it." The BBC man charged backstage to meet them, only to encounter a frosty Atkinson mulling over his performance. "He looked at me like an ass had been deposited on his doormat," Lloyd laughs. "I told him they were the best thing I'd ever seen." From there, Lloyd took Atkinson first to Radio 3 for a Curtis-penned show called The Atkinson People, and then on to TV glories. "Richard will be the first to say that there's been difficult patches," Lloyd tells Empire, "but really it's been like a very long, polygamous marriage."
