The A To Z Of Richard Curtis | Vicars
V
Vicars

Richard Curtis has the greatest gift for mining the Church of England for comedy this side of, well, the Church of England itself. When Rowan Atkinson's cloth-tongued C-of-E bumbler Father Gerald hasn't been mixing up "ghost" and "goat" and making a chuffing mess of wedding vows ("Why I, Lydia", "Why I, Bernard"), The Vicar Of Dibley has been poking gentle fun at the parish politics. While not exactly Costa-Gavras in a cassock, Dibley gave its creator the chance to make a serious point about women in the priesthood. "He had an agenda," remembers its star Dawn French, "in wanting to normalise female priests. Other female vicars are being compared to her now," she pauses, "which actually must have pissed them off."
