"Ummm..."

"In the words of David Cassidy..." fumbles Charles (Hugh Grant) famously in Four Weddings, "...um, while he was still with The Partridge Family, 'I think I love you,' and um, I-I just wondered by any chance you wouldn't like to..." As one, the nation repressed the urge to bellow "SPIT IT OUT!" and cheered when Andie MacDowell melted. It was a defining moment for the British romantic hero, finally freed from the shackles of not being a bit of an idiot, as it for Grant, who was catapulted, with mixed results, into the Hollywood mainstream. "I read that script and thought, 'My God, I've never met anyone like this,' says Grant, "then I went to the first rehearsal, saw Richard and thought: 'I see, it's you.' Really, I just aped him. And now I've made a career out of it.'" Curtis disagrees. "You got a lot of Hugh as well as a lot of what I'd written," he reflects. "He's a very complicated, interesting, charming man and he was able to use a lot of that in the film."
