Forget 'I is for Independent' – part of it, at least – because Curtis has had one happy Hollywood studio experience. The studio was DreamWorks, which, under CEO Stacey Snider's canny offices, approached Curtis with a problematic project with a Great War setting that was familiar to the Blackadder Goes Forth man. "I was in L.A. having tea with Stacey when she asked if Steven Spielberg could meet with me about War Horse," Curtis recalls in Script magazine, "I gave him ten things that I thought should change and thought, 'Well, if he likes eight of them, we should do it.'" Spielberg loved them, the pair struck it off and Curtis was hired to move Joey's carrots six inches closer to Berlin. Reworking Lee Hall's (Billy Elliot) adaptation of the Michael Morpungo story took three months and a dozen drafts and nary a plump-breasted pigeon in sight.
