The A To Z Of Richard Curtis | Spitting Image
S
Spitting Image

Richard Curtis joined ITV's latexy satire for a short stint in 1984, taking his place in a platoon of writers that included future-Blackadder man Ben Elton, Red Dwarf's Rob Grant and novelist John O'Farrell. His greatest contributions came in concert with fellow Oxford alumnus Philip Pope (you can spot Pope as painter Leonardo Acropolis in Blackadder II), with whom he penned ditties of varying degrees of silliness. The pair co-wrote 'Meaningless Songs (In Very High Voices)' as The Hee Bee Gee Bees, accidentally getting to Number 2 in Australia in the process, knocking out several other tunes for the show. "Richard wasn't central to Spitting Image," producer John Lloyd remembers, "but a hallmark of him is that he's always there for you. He's just an amazingly generous spirit."
