The A To Z Of Richard Curtis | Blackadder
B
Blackadder

For many, the greatest British sitcom of all started in the frosty chambers of Alnwick Castle and ended on a BBC soundstage with a killer farewell six years later [See: 'G for Goodbyeee']. With Oxford muckers Rowan Atkinson and composer Howard Goodall, producer John Lloyd and co-writer Ben Elton (and a crate or two of turnips shaped like a thingie), Curtis helped forge four seasons and two specials of purest green that turned sarcasm into the newest art form. His narrative flair created story threads that were an integral, if underacknowledged, part of Blackadder's success. "Richard Curtis was a greater respect for plot," recalls Elton of his co-writer. "I'd start with a pen and a typewriter and just see where it took me – sometimes into some nice plot areas, sometimes up a cul-de-sac. Richard did that too, but he introduced me to the idea of perhaps trying to work out a plot first."
