The A To Z Of Richard Curtis | Oddball Flatmates
O
Oddball Flatmates

The Oddball Flatmate is another recurring Curtis archetype. These Gumtree goblins' currency is exasperation: their rent is late, dirty dishes pile up and just try bringing a movie star back when they're home. Of all of them, Rhys Ifans' Spike in Notting Hill is definitely the most naked, but Tom Hollander's cranky, booze-soaked playwright gives Domnhall Gleeson similar issues in About Time, while Radio Rock's abode in The Boat That Rocked – a flat with an anchor, granted – must contend with 'Thick' Kevin, a mighty depth charge of gormlessness. They're Curtis's holy fools, delivering the odd moment of wisdom amid all the chaos and suspiciously greying Y-fronts. Honorary mention, too, to Ron Anderson, Rowan Atkinson's love rival to Jeff Goldblum's Dexter in the Curtis-scripted The Tall Guy. He shares a similar role, if not rental payments. "First you waste four years of my life," the jilted Dexter complains, "and then you take the only thing I ever really cared about!" "Your bicycle?" straight-bats Anderson.
