The A To Z Of Richard Curtis | Mr. Bean
M
Mr. Bean

With his Monsieur-Hulot-in-London charms, occasionally turkey-headed lunk Mr. Bean is another gold-plated Atkinson/Curtis co-creation. The character was born at Oxford University, where Atkinson played around with the idea of "a child in a grown man's body", and spanned 14 episodes, two $200 million plus movies, a spin-off animation and an Olympics opening ceremony cameo. Bean-mania reached its highpoint with a 1991 episode, The Trouble With Mr. Bean, which had 18.7 million people glued to his battles with a rogue wasp. Curtis recollects the unique challenge of his scripting sessions with Atkinson. "I couldn't write any words," he recalls, "so I'd just stand there pretending to be a man about to the meet the Queen and think, 'Okay, I've got some shoelaces, a tie, I can blow my nose...' Those rehearsals with Rowan were unbelievably rewarding, because the really great japes would come out of us in a room."
