The A To Z Of Richard Curtis | Jones, Bridget
J
Jones, Bridget

First movie: $281 million (v v good!); Second movie: $268 million (gasp!); Third movie: can I finish this fag first?

Like a big-knickered hybrid of Fran Kubelik, Elizabeth Bennet and Oliver Reed, Bridget Jones' unquenchable sense of romance and occasionally horrifying lifestyle choices made her beloved of millions. On the big screen, she's still Helen Fielding's heroine but is also a recognisably Curtisian creation whose awkwardness and susceptibility to a catastrophic pratfall or two plays like Four Weddings' Charles with a chromosome added. Fittingly, her arc from queen of TV-dinnerdom to graceful object of desire is never really completed and the less said about her reportage the better ("El Nino? It's a blip. Latin music's on its way out"), but Curtis and Andrew Davies's adaptation make that not-quite-journey a huge amount of fun.
